The three 2010 World GP Champions talk about love and racing

By Toni M.

spanish champions cardena sera

Spain wiped up this year’s Grand Prix World Championships, dominating all three classes with Jorge Lorenzo taking the MotoGP title, Toni Elias the Moto2 one and Marc Marquez in 125cc and even the runner-ups were all of Spanish nationality, so the country is rightly celebrating their champions.

In a highly entertaining chat on the “El Larguero” show, the three world champions talked about their popularity, how difficult it is to cultivate love interests while motorcycle racing.

Jorge Lorenzo cheekily confessed, “Now I have a championship title, won more races, have more fans … and more money. I have nothing to hide. I live in Spain and pay my taxes here, “ but admitted that that he’s had only one real girlfriend, and that was when he was 16 years old.

Toni Elias also waxed sentimental: “It’s complicated. I’ve had three girlfriends, all for a very long time, very special, but it’s difficult to reconcile love with motorcycles.” While the youngest of the trio Marc Marquez, said “this season I haven’t had time to fall in love, but this winter …”

Jorge Lorenzo went all out during the show and turned singer, dueting with Dani Martin of the El Canto del Loco. If you decide you can’t miss hearing a MotoGP Champion (who doesn’t have the singing talent of James Toseland) butcher ‘Quiero aprender de ti’ (what I learned from you) just click here.

Toni Elias didn't get the silver yesterday

By Toni M.

toni elias valencia 2010

Yesterday two riders at Valencia looked like they jumped straight out of a window of Cartier. Jorge Lorenzo with his gold and Swarovski studded 12.000 euro helmet and Toni Elias stood out from the rest of the Moto2 field with his bright silvery leathers and matching bike livery.

Fabrizio Cecchini of the Gresini Moto2 team prepared this special livery as a tribute to the World title that Elias took in Moto2, and as a gesture of thanks to Elias on behalf of Fausto Gresini and Midori Moriwaki.

While Lorenzo took a stunning 9th win in MotoGP, Elias on the final lap went into the win it or bin it mode. Going from an almost podium, into the gravel trap to end up finishing 30th, not exactly how he planned to end his season before returning to MotoGP.

“I gave 200 per cent to win this race and maybe that was the problem! Over the course of the season I have ridden with caution and tried to avoid getting involved in hand to hand combat but with the title in the bag I went for the win at all costs,” said Elias. “Unfortunately I collided with Iannone and crashed but I went down fighting and trying something impossible so I’m still happy. It has been an amazing season and I wanted to give the team one last gift before I leave because they have done a great job.”

Toni Elias returns to MotoGP with LCR Honda

By Toni M.

toni elias

After spending a season in purgatory, because no MotoGP team would hire him, despite finishing 7th in last year’s standings, and then proving everyone wrong by winning the 2010 inaugural Moto2 Championship, Toni Elías will be returning to MotoGP in 2011 with Lucio Cecchinello’s LCR Honda team.

The deal which was widely rumored between LCR and Elías (with a little help by Dorna) was announced late this afternoon at Estoril. Elias will be replacing Randy de Puniet, who is expected to move to Pramac Ducati, with a big hand by Dorna, to help the Italian team to continue running a two rider squad.

“I’m very happy to be able to confirm I’ll be back in MotoGP with LCR and Lucio Cecchinello and am also delighted Lucio has given me this opportunity, I think together we can have very good results,
” said Elías. “I’m very motivated. I think together we can have a very good season. I will start in Valencia after the last race and I am eager to get the job with the team underway as soon as possible!” Elias confirmed that Gresini has released him and that he will be allowed to test at Valencia immediately after the season finale.

De Puniet's manager denies talks so far with Pramac Ducati

By Toni M.

randy de puniet

Yesterday we posted the rumor that Randy de Puniet may have been headed to Pramac Ducati in 2011, however his manager Eric Mahe, has denied that he’s been in talks so far with the Italian team.

It seems that the French rider was ready to re-up with Checchinello and even had ELF ready to support the team in a bigger way, however after De Puniet’s leg injury and talks that Andrea Dovizioso could have been ended up either with Gresini or Cecchinello, negotiations died down.

Dorna wants to keep DePuniet in the series to have a French rider, but they also want Moto2 champion Toni Elias back in MotoGP and as Elias certainly prefers a Honda over a Ducati, he’ll end with Cecchinello while Dorna will have to help fund Pramac even more than they usually do with satellite teams, to run a second Ducati for the Frenchman.

“As of today, it’s almost 99% certain that Elias will ride for Cecchinello next year,” said Mahe. “With Suzuki we dropped everything at Malaysia, because the manufacturer doesn’t want to run two bikes in 2011. We’ll have to see for 2012. That leaves the Pramac option for Randy, however at this date we haven’t had any discussions, hopefully it will happen at Estoril next week.”

Toni Elias grabbed a further hold on the Moto2 championship by winning his third straight race at Indianapolis. The Gresini Moriwaki rider despite suffering from a bad case of the flu was able to prevail again in a red flagged and shortened race.

The first start had to red flagged due to two separate multi pile-ups at Turn 2, with Lukas Pesek (who started the cannonball incident) Gabor Talmacsi, Simone Corsi and Michael Ranseder all going down and in the second, which included Yonny Hernandez, RogerLee Hayden, Shoya Tomizawa and Vladimir Ivanov. The race was shortened to 17 laps with Ranseder and Tomizawa unable to return to action in the restart, while Simone Corsi was pushed back to the last place on the grid for being late.

In the restart Elias got the hole shot while pole man Julian Simon dropped to fourth behind Anthony West and Scott Redding. Simon got past Redding on the third lap and then set his sights on West and got past him and then overtook Elias on lap four, while the back of the field was another crash fest. Toni Elias stretched his Moto2 Championship lead in today’s race by taking his fourth race win of the season at Brno.

Paul Denning confirms Suzuki in MotoGP in 2011

By Toni M.

rizla suzuki team 2010

One of the biggest worries that is afflicting Dorna’s CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta is that Suzuki may decide to do what Kawasaki did at the end of 2008, and pull out of MotoGP before their contract is actually up in 2011.

Suzuki is one of the worst performing teams in the premier classand this not withstanding the amount of development that everyone keeps saying that has gone into the GSV-R and that the Rizla Suzuki team may get a waiver to use more engines for the rest of this season.

Many think that the team will fall back even further in 2011, when the 800cc will see out their last season before the new 1000cc rules goes into effect in 2012 and that further investments would be just throwing away more money, however according to team manager Paul Denning speaking to British Eurosport at the Brands Hatch BSB round yesterday said that he is “100%” sure Suzuki will remain in MotoGP for 2011, but could not offer further confirmation that the team would remain in MotoGP after that date.

Alvaro Bautista is under contract for next year, but Loris Capirossi, who lead the development of Japanese machine in these last two years is completely disappointed with the lack of results and is already deep in talks with Pramac Ducati for next season with former MotoGP rider Toni Elias, who currently leads the standings in Moto2 widely tipped for the vacant seat in Rizla Suzuki.
