Vintage Vespa GS kit for Vespa PX and LML Star

By Alison

Want a vintage Vespa look without all the time and money spent trying to find and restore an old Vespa GS? The guys at Vivo Scooters have the solution for you with their Vivo Body Kit which takes a Vespa PX or LML Star and fits it up with accessories to make it look like a GS.

Vivo Scooters are in fact restorers of vintage Italian scooters, but have design the bodykit to create the look without spending the money. The curvy GS look can be achieved through fitting various mudguards, indicators, body panels, front suspension and even a glove box to create the vintage look. Vivo Scooters says:

Our experience in classic scooter restoration has lead us to develop a complete bodykit taking design from the 1960’s iconic Vespa GS160 MK2. Months of work and we are finally able to release for sale our Vivo GS BodyKits for the Vespa PX and LML Star scooters. We wanted our kit to be simple to retro fit, no drilling, no cutting no fibreglass or gelcoat panels, offering a like for like quality ! All our items are available to buy individually or as a complete kit, supplied primer or painted and ready to fit.

The unfinished kit costs about €750, or if you want the full painted job, it’s about €1,100. We think it’s still more satisfying to restore your own model, but if you don’t have the resources, and want the vintage look, this is an option. Check out the Vivo Scooters website for more info.

Pic of the day: Vespa at the 1960 Rome Olympics

By Alison

Vespa 1960 Rome Olympics

This photo of Vespa at the Rome Olympics celebrates 50 years of EuroVespa - the huge Vespa meet that took place in occasion of the Olympics in 1960. It’s part of a photographic exhibition organised by the Vespa Club Roma that will close tomorrow, so if you’re in town you’ve got the last day to go and see it.

The Vespa meet in Rome this year took place last weekend, with Vespas of all makes and years participating. The 1960 Olympic games was a key moment in Italian sporting history, marking a recovery of the country after World War II and becoming a fundamental part of the economic boom that propelled Italy into the modern era. The Vespa is just one symbol of those times.

Vintage Vespa in carbon: Nerocarbonio Vespa

By Alison

Carbonio su una Vespa? si...e pure d'epoca!

After having looked at the lovely Bimota DB7 Nerocarbonio at Milan’s Design Week, on display was also a Nerocarbonio Vespa in carbon fibre. The vintage Vespa GS has been completely restored with carbon, which you can see in the photo below.

This Vespa is a truly special model, with the classic Vespa beauty dressed up with the modern and futuristic clothes of carbon fibre.

We are completely enchanted, and given the success, it looks as though the model will have a limited production of about ten units. The carbon fibre Vespa pic is after the jump.

1963 vintage Vespa pics

1963 Vespa

Here are some shots I took of an old Vespa, which was on the bench in the entrance to a restaurant where we had dinner on the weekend. The Vespa features two separate saddles for the rider and passenger, along with a spare wheel at the front.

I’m curious to know how heavy such a Vespa would be, if anyone knows. How many people would it take to lift onto the bench…? More gallery photos after the jump.

Yellow Vespa sidecar at Vinitaly wine fair

By Alison

Vespa and sidecar on show

While at Vinitaly to go exploring the world of Italian wine, I came across this vintage style Vespa with a sidecar as a promo piece for white wines from Friuli. With a topless woman clutching a bottle, and saying “the only white I love”, it was a rather unusual thing to have stumbled across at the wine fair.

I couldn’t figure out if the Vespa and sidecar were prizes in a raffle or if they were just there as a feature piece to attract visitors. More pics after the jump

"La mia Toscana in Vespa": book by Ben Birdsall

By Alison

vespaIf you’ve ever wanted to tour Tuscany on a vintage Vespa, now is your chance - only you’ll have to read a book. On June 20, Ben Birdsall’s book, “La mia Toscana in Vespa”, will be presented at the Castello dei Vicari. It includes the stories of 1,200 kilometres spent on a Vespa 50, 1979, with everything you could want and more: inspirational rolling hills, typical Tuscan cuisine, and beautiful piazzas.

Written by an Irishman living in Tuscany for many years, each day starts with some poetry of the itinerary for that day, after which time is marked only by the sun and what you want to see. Go to Castello dei Vicari for more information.

Powderscooter: restored Vespa's from Italy to Vietnam and back again

By Alison

Vespa Classic

There’s something bizarre in telling the story of a Vespa that left for Vietnam from the Piaggio facilities in Pontedera Pisa, in 1969, and which then returned home in 2008.

We had the opportunity of speaking with Mr. Fulvio Bisaro, who talked about his purchase through the site Powderscooter.com. At the beginning he wasn’t very calm - as you can imagine he was concerned about being well ripped off. But the desire to have a Vespa like that in the photo, at a price not too exorbitant, and the professional and speedy nature of response to his request, convinced Fulvio to try it out. And we can say it all went well.

Vespa and Lambretta have made Vietnamese motoring history. Despite the sturdy and trustworthy Italian models, time and climate take their toll and it’s easy to pick up frames and parts to restore. The work is managed by the family who set up the site and the low cost of parts explains why it can be convenient to buy in Vietnam. Below, Fulvio tells his story.

New Vespa museum in Ravenna

By Alison

VespaThe new Vespa museum, called ‘Collezione Vespa Mauro Pascoli” was opened last Saturday in Ravenna, at the Mir di Fornace Zarattini, in the presence of 12,000 people.

Dedicated to the legendary scooter, the museum extends across more than 500 square metres and is part of the “Terra di Motori” group of 12 museums that includes historic bikes and cars. Of the attendance numbers, about 1000 people came from overseas for the opening.

The museum holds more than 150 exhibits of Vespa, Ape and other Piaggio vehicles, 1,500 images of posters, gatherings, photos and brochures and about 200 manuals. The exhibition comes from a private collection of a dealer in parts for vintage Vespas and includes plaques, trophies, catalogues of parts changes, service station manuals, toy models and accessories dating from 1946.
