MotoGP Champion Valentino Rossi and Carlo Cassina have completed the three day Wales Rally GB and finished in twelfth position driving a Stobart backed Ford Focus RS WRC car.
Rossi displayed an increasing confidence and affinity with his Ford Focus as each day and each stage progressed. 45th after stage one of the event but rose to 24th by the end of day one, 15th at the end of day two and 12th after the completion of the final stage. Several stages of the rally on the first day were cancelled due to rain, ice and snow.
The Italian missed out on beating his eleventh place in the 2006 Rally of New Zealand finish by just one position, but conditions were far worse in Wales and Rossi was at least able to finish much closer to the rally winner than he had been in New Zealand and during his WRC debut at the 2002 Rally GB, where he crashed out of the very first forest stage .
MotoGp world champion Valentino Rossi will compete in this year’s Wales Rally GB - the final round of the FIA World Rally Championship - in a car bearing support for the BBC’s Children in Need appeal. The Wales Rally GB takes place two weeks after the televised BBC Children in Need event but with Rossi’s car’s livery featuring the fundraising mascot - Pudsey bear - charity bosses hope his participation will lead to one final push for donation
Children in Need’s Marc Phillips, said: “It’s a tremendous honour to have Valentino Rossi promoting BBC Children in Need. We have had a remarkable response to this year’s event on November 14th – and Wales Rally GB will be a fabulous final flourish for us. With a charity auction being held at the Service Park on the Friday night and volunteers collecting throughout the rally, it will be an important few days for us.”
Valentino Rossi commented: “This is really exciting news. I’m looking forward to Wales Rally GB – and am hoping for a good result at next weekend’s Monza Rally in order to prepare for the forests.”
He concluded: “I’m also delighted to be supporting BBC Children in Need, which does such vital work in the UK. It’s a great charity and one I’m very pleased to be involved in.”
The Italian, will drive a Ford Focus RS World Rally Car, co-driven by Carlo Cassina, aged 48.
