Marco Melandri (1st and 2nd)
“It’s a great sensation to be on my third win of the season but I still need to do a double. I’m really happy with today’s results. At the beginning of race one I didn’t think I’d catch up on Max, so I immediately passed Eugene in order to tail him. I was struggling to keep in front, at times Max was faster than me. Race two was also very difficult. I certainly didn’t give up but it wasn’t easy to keep pushing. Max and I had a nice battle which I think we both enjoyed, and I’m sure the spectators did also. I have to say thanks to the team for doing such a good job again. I’m looking forward to Silverstone.”
This weekend’s eighth round of the World Superbike championship saw title rivals Max Biaggi and Marco Melandri share a win a piece in the double header at Brno and points leader Carlos Checa limit the damage, by taking two third place podiums on the Czech track where the Ducati clearly lacked acceleration power.

Race 2 at the Czech circuit of Brno was almost an exact carbon copy of race 1, with Max Biaggi and Marco Melandri duelling for the entire race and Carlos Checa hanging on, but never actually getting between the two battling Italians.
Only this time Max Biaggi gave himself a belated 40th birthday present with a victory in a final two lap thriller with his fellow countryman. Biaggi again got the holeshot from his pole position and Melandri was once again his shadow. The Yamaha rider took the lead with 13 laps to go, but the Roman Emperor wasn’t having any and regained the head of the race, fastly changing his rhythm and giving it a big push.
Melandri continuing his tailing of the Aprilia Alitalia rider, pouncing on the penultimate lap at turn 3, but Biaggi replicated at turn 8 holding off the R1 rider to the line, and finishing .222s ahead, almost the same gap as in race 1.

A boiling asphalt, a hot and battled out duel between the title contenders taken almost to the line, made for an exciting race 1 at Brno, in the first part of the eighth round of this World Superbike championship.
However, it was Yamaha’s Marco Melandri who won his third World Superbike race of the season in an intense battle over the 20 lap race with Max Biaggi and with Carlos Checa joining the fray for second in the latter stages.
The Roman Emperor got the holeshot, but Melandri was right on his tail after disposing of his slower team mate Eugene Laverty, relentlessly sticking to the Aprilia Alitalia’s rider for almost the entire race. The two exchanging positions for the first time on lap 9 after Biaggi made a slight error, with Melandri gaining the lead, but Biaggi returned the favour; but the Yamaha rider wasn’t going to allow Biaggi to run away. The Italian from Ravenna put in the decisive move that would seal the outcome of race came with three laps remaining, keeping his lines tight and Biaggi at bay with no place to pass, crossing over the finish line with a marginal lead of 0.241s.
Carlos Checa took third, after losing an incredibly long time passing Eugene Laverty, but the points leader made up a big 2.2s deficit in just three laps, catching the feuding Italian duo and managing to pass Biaggi for second after the Italian ran wide, but then lost the spot when the Corsaro caught him on the straight and passed him with his more powerful Aprilia; the Spaniard however would never really have enough grunt to enter the battle for the first spot.

Tomorrow’s World Superbike double header at Brno will be all about the weather, it’s expected to rain at some point which could mix up things and tire management, with some riders still unsure on which tire to use.
Here’s what some of the riders had to say after today’s Superpole session:
Max Biaggi - 1st
“Obviously I’m very pleased to start from the front and also to have made a really good lap. Evidently, along with my team, we have adapted well to the track’s extremely fickle conditions. I’m also pleased for the many fans that I have here and for the many who have followed me to be here. But, as always, what really counts are the results tomorrow. And that is a job that still must be done. I won’t delude myself. There are two very long and difficult races ahead of us tomorrow. There are many variables which can affect our performance tomorrow and the weather, which I’m told is uncertain, is the one I’m least concerned about”.

Superpole at Brno was the usual exciting affair that World Superbikes offers.
In Superpole 1 the fastest rider was Marco Melandri on the new softer version of the Pirelli race tire putting in a best lap 1′59.379 that put him on the top of the chart followed by Carlos Checa and Brno home boy Jakub Smrz. Max Biaggi had a big moment but managed to save it and ended up in 4th.
During SP1 Aprilia Alitalia rider Leon Camier crashed out, but managed to return to track for the final minute of the session and mounting one of the two special Superpole qualifying tires and went all out and took 7th. Not making the cut into SP2 were Leon Haslam (wife Olivia is expecting their first child) , Noriyuki Haga, Lorenzo Lanzi, Matteo Baiocco.

Sunny skies and higher temperatures met the WSBK riders this Saturday morning at Brno for QP2, and with the riders much more concentrated on set-up issues andwhich tires to use for Sunday’s races than qualifying for the Superpole due to the much higher asphalt temperatures that they are expected to find tomorrow afternoon.
Carlos Checa remained the fastest rider, but unable to improve his yesterday’s lap time but no other rider was able to close in on him as the track was much slower and with a lot less grip. Max Biaggi despite his chattering problems was able to improve his lap times, as did Alstare Suzuki’s Michel Fabrizio.
Not making the cut into this afternoon’s Superpole will be Ruben Xaus, Roberto Rolfo, Joan Lascorz, Chris Vermeulen, Alex Lowes and Victor Kispataki.

Carlos Checa moved to the top of the time sheets in this afternoon’s provisional pole session at Brno. The Althea rider layed down a 1′59.322 lap that was almost a second and half faster than his morning lap time leaving Effenbert-Liberty Ducati rider Jakub Smrz adrift by more than two tenths of a second.
Yamaha duo Marco Melandri and Eugene Laverty took third and fourth respectively, while reigning World Champion was fifth with a last lap lunge. Tom Sykes was sixth and he too used his final lap to propel himself into the spot.
Leon Haslam was seventh followed by Michel Fabrizio’s Alstare Suzuki. Sylvain Guintoli took the ninth spot and the last rider to be within a seconf of the flying Checa. Ayrton Badovini (BMW Motorrad Italia) closed out the top ten
Leon Camier was 11th after a technical problem dropped him down the charts in last minutes of the session. While JamesToseland who opted out of the weekend, and stand-in Lorenzo Lorenzo Lanzi took 14th. Alex Lowes (Castrol Honda) crashed at the beginning of the session at turn 8, was just 21st.

It took 15 laps and a 18th spot in this morning’s WSBK free practice at Brno for James Toseland to realize that he isn’t fit enough to race in this weekend’s double header at the Czech circuit.
The BMW Italia rider is hoping to return to full fitness, after missing most of the season due to his wrist injury, for his home race at Silverstone, July 28th to 30th. “Had a run out this morning to get up to speed, unfortunately I have to sit out the rest of the weekend and get fully fit for Silverstone,” posted the Briton on his Facebook page.
Substitute rider Lorenzo Lanzi was already on standby in the event that Toseland couldn’t ride, and will take Toseland’s place in the BMW Italia team for the rest of the weekend.
