Lorenzo Lanzi to sub for James Toseland at Misano and Aragon

By Toni M.

lorenzo lanzi

With James Toseland ruled out of the next two rounds of the World Superbike championship, BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike Team has called on former Superbike rider Lorenzo Lanzi to fill in for him.

Lanzi 29, debuted in World Superbikes in 2005 and has three victories to his name, twice in 2005 and a third in 2008, all on Ducati’s for various teams, his last podium was a second place in 2010 in race 1 at Imola, riding for the now defunct DFX Corse team.

The Italian was unable to find a team this season, so his debut on Toseland’s BMW S1000RR will give him a chance to be seen again and maybe a shot of finding a team to ride for next year.

No Misano and Motorland Aragon rounds for James Toseland

By Toni M.

james toseland mmp 2011

James Toseland has suffered another setback in recovering from his serious wrist injury that he sustained in a testing accident at Aragon last March, because he has been ruled out from both this weekend’s World Superbike round at Misano Adriatico and the following week’s round at Motorland Aragon in Spain

After taking part in race 1 at Miller Motorsports Park and garnering one point, he elected to sit out of race two because of pain and swelling to his wrist, and following a further check-up, his doctors have advised him to avoid any racing efforts for the next four weeks.

“Just been to see the doctor today as my wrist started to hurt again after Salt Lake,”
posted Toseland on his Facebook page. “I’ve been told not to race for the next four weeks - gutted is an understatement, but I’m determined to make a come back in Brno.”

The BMW Italia rider has been able to complete only one round and one race so far this season.

Chris Vermeluen ready to kick-start his season at Misano (w/video)

By Toni M.

Kawaski will be back to three riders this weekend at the World Superbike round at Misano Adriatico, as Chris Vermeulen will be returning to his team after missing the Miller Motorsports Park races.

The Australian rider who has missed the better part of last season, and several rounds of this one, has been battling a very long rehabilitation period after last year’s knee surgery and then took another blow when he crashed out during practice at Monza hurting his elbow, but now it looks like he’s back to full fitness after recently carrying out a two day test at the Motorland Aragon circuit in Spain.

“We tested recently at Aragon, at the full Superbike track and it was good because I had never been there, which means I have learned the layout for that race which happens right after Misano,”
said Vermeulen. “The first day I did 60 laps and the second day 72, so it wasn’t too bad. We got a lot of work done and tried a lot of parts and settings. My previously injured knee is a lot better than it has been. I am feeling more and more back to my old self on the bike. The elbow I injured recently will also be a lot better when we get to Misano. Now I am just looking forward to getting to a racetrack I know well, on a bike I have tested and ridden a lot more now.”

WSBK Misano: Max Biaggi Runs Away with Race 2

By Toni M.

max biaggi

Max Biaggi took another win in Race 2 at Misano, his fourth double of the season (Portimao, Monza, Miller and now Misano) and after breaking away from the rest of field on lap ten, imposing an almost impossible rhythm for the rest of field taking a seven second lead before slowing down on the final lap to win by four seconds.

Leon Haslam turned around his fortunes in Race 2 after his 8th spot in Race1, the Brit held off several riders who were fighting for a podium to take second and was ahead of Fabrizio by 0.4o9s.

The third spot on the podium went to Michel Fabrizio, who despite a well deserved podium after taking the spot from Cal Crutchlow at the “Quercia” on the penultimate lap, did a ’sour grapes’ interview at the parc ferme, stating that the bike that won is a MotoGP and the rest are Superbikes and that rules have to be changed.

WSBK Misano: Max Biaggi gives himself a Brithday Present and Wins

By Toni M.

max biaggi

Three riders, two on factory bikes and one on a privateer Ducati, and the sum of the age of all three riders adds up to 116, but veterans Max Biaggi, Carlos Checa and Troy Corser, certainly didn’t show they have intention in slowing down in Race 1 at Misano Adriatico, but it was Max Biaggi who cruised to his seventh victory of the season.

Poleman Troy Corser took the lead of the race, but he had Max Biaggi and Carlos Checa constantly on his tail for two thirds of the race until the Aprilia rider, on the 17th lap passed him and then would never relinquish the lead to the finish line.

Corser running second tried to catch Biaggi, but an error two laps later let Carlos Checa through and the Austrialian with his tires fading could only finish in third.

WSBK Misano: Troy Corser takes maiden pole for BMW

By Toni M.

troy corser

Troy Corser took his first pole position for the BMW team in today’s Superpole shoot-out at Misano. The Australian pole specialist (his 43rd) and two times World Superbike champion blazed a lap around the Misano Adriatico circuit to finish in a stratospheric 1′35.001 in the the third stint.

No other rider could come close to this lap time, infact Max Biaggi, who was celebrating his 39th birthday took second place on the grid, but was five tenths slower, but has an excellent race pace that bodes well for tomorrow’s races.

Third went to Michel Fabrizio, who is trying to raise the bar on his dismal season but he didn’t finish well when he crashed after the chequered flag on the warm down lap.

Warmer temperatures saw lap times drop during this afternoon’s QP1 at Misano with Cal Crutchlow topping the timesheets with a best lap of 1.36.288m on par with his Misano test times.

Troy Corser continues his good form, he was second and a mere 0.056s from Cruthlow’s QP1 lap, despite a crash half way through the session.

Leon Haslam completed the top three again and he finished just 0.077s from Crutchlow while Michel Fabrizio took fourth in front of privateer Ducati rider Carlos Checa.

WSBK Misano: Troy Corser draws first Blood in FP

By Toni M.

corser misano

Testing at Mugello and Misano seem to have paid off for Troy Corser. The BMW rider took first place in today’s free practice at the Misano World Circuit finishing ahead of Xerox Ducati’s Michel Fabrizio and Alstare Suzuki’s Leon Haslam.

The Australian put down a best lap of 1′37.362 (which is still more that 1 second higher than Cal Crutchlow’s best lap during the Misano test) while Fabrizio was off 0.268s from Corser’s best time and Haslam was just o.069 from Fabrizio.

James Toseland who’s still chasing his first win this season took fourth, followed by an amazing Luca Scassa who is riding Noriyuki Haga’s former 1198 F09 bike, while Haga himself took sixth, despite suffering a technical problem during the session.

WSBK Misano 2009 - Rider Quotes

By Toni M.

Misano 2009 riders

Here are some rider quotes from today’s exciting 8th round of the WSBK Championship at Misano World Circuit:

Ben Spies - (1st, 9th)

“Race one was definitely better than race two! It was good for us, we did what we had to do. I stayed as close as I could to Fabrizio, I couldn’t run Byrne’s pace but wanted to stay with Michel as he was the one who mattered to me in the championship. I picked the right moment to come in and get out on dry tyres and switch bikes and put in good pace and we managed to win the race. Race two wasn’t so great, I had an issue with the clutch on the start, for the first few laps I was short shifting and trying to ride round it. It finally came better but when I got behind Corser and Kagayama and those guys I couldn’t get round them easily. The last seven or eight laps it came good and I tried to run everyone down and started picking them off. I got up to Sykes and Haslam and they were having their little battle, we were definitely faster but I needed another lap to get round them which I didn’t have. It’s frustrating as we’ve lost good points this year and we’d be leading the championship with them. We’ll go to Donington and try to start over again and see what happens.”

Jonathan Rea – (7th, 1st)

“I just want to thank the whole crew and the Andreani group for working so hard to help make this happen. It really bodes well for us all for the rest of the season. We knew we had the pace this weekend but race one was a pretty bad situation. I needed to start with scrubbed tyres in the wet but the problem on the sighting lap finished that plan. With the penalties and brand new tyres and having destroyed my footrest and rear brake in the crash with Kiyo, it was difficult, so seventh was about as good as we could have hope for. Race two was great and, as soon as I knew I had the pace to match the two Ducatis I was comfortable. I tried a few different lines in the closing laps to probe and find the best way through. When I got past Fabrizio, it was pretty straightforward. It’s really nice to win here in Italy, in Ducati’s back yard, where we thought it would be quite hard. But we’ve come leaps and bounds recently and hopefully we can fight at the front in every race.”
