Max Biaggi Hits Out After Penalty

By Toni M.

biaggi-monza

Max Biaggi was extremely angry and upset when finishing third in Race 1 he received a penalty for cutting the Roggia chicane on the seventh lap. When the Italian went to podium, the loudspeakers announced that Biaggi had received a 20 second penalty and the Monza race direction was awarding third place to Kiyonari and that the Roman Emperor was being relegated to 11th place.

Here’s what the Italian rider had to say after Race 1:

“This Championship is managed by amateurs! It’s disgusting the way they treated us! First, the cutting of the chicane was almost insignificant and I didn’t even gain a tenth of a second and second, when I asked for the FIM representative, Claude Denis for an explanation he told me that he didn’t have time to discuss this with me. I’m tired of this conduct, I’m calling it quits with SBK.”

Aprilia was able to convince Biaggi to take part in Race 2, where he finished 5th.

After Race 2 Biaggi was much calmer and added:

WSBK Monza Race 2 - The Spies Vendetta

By Toni M.

ben spies monza

Bitter and still hurting for what happened in Race 1, Ben Spies took the lead and kept it from start to finish leaving podium finishers Michel Fabrizio, who had to start race 2 with his second bike, and Ryuichi Kiyonari fighting for second place with Fabrizio finally taking second and Kiyonari third.

Fabrizio and Kiyonari battled it out almost the entire race and Kiyonari passed the Ducati Xerox rider on lap 7 with Jonathan Rea and Max Biaggi closing fast, but an error on lap 10 made Biaggi loose contact with the group leaving the British rider with fourth and the Aprilia rider fifth. Tom Sykes was sixth and Leon Haslam, seventh after starting 17th on the grid. The battle for 8th saw Jakub Smrz with his satellite Ducati get the best of Ruben Xaus, Carlos Checa, and Regis Laconi. Troy Corser after his crash in Race 1 did not start Race 2.

Shinya Nakano and Broc Parkes came home in 12th and 13th, while Luca Scassa beat Matteo Baiocco at the finish line by just 0,003s.

WSBK Monza Race 1 - The Agony and The Ecstasy

By Toni M.

A terrifying accident at the first corner of World Superbike Championship at Monza brought Race 1 to an almost immediate halt with five riders seriously involved.

The first chicane of the Monza circuit is notorious for accidents and hated by all racers because it tightens into a dangerous and tight funnel and it was here that Makoto Tamada clipped the back of Brendan Roberts’ Ducati who then collided into Tommy Hill and Troy Corser with both bikes going down then catching fire. With Tamada down, Roberts slid off in the gravel, his bike sliding and flying into the pack and wiping out Max Neukirchner, who had entered the corner in the lead.

Neukirchner suffered a broken right femur and a dislocated left foot, while Roberts has a break high on his left femur and also sustained a heavy blow to his throat. Makoto Tamada suffered a broken left wrist. A brusied Troy Corser was able to restart the race but then crashed out and Tommy Hill finished his race 20th.

Race 1 was red flagged for over an hour to pick up the pieces and clean up the track from oil spills.

By Toni M.

ben spies

Ben Spies during the third stint of the WSBK Superpole stole the first postion from Michel Fabrizio with an amazing 1:44:073 and shattering the lap record held by Troy Bayliss and getting his fifth consecutive superpole at the Temple of Speed, Monza.

Second place on the grid went to Michel Fabrizio who lapped at 1:44:2 less than two tenths off Spies super lap and an excellent Ryiuchi Kiyonari who’ll start third on the grid and the first Honda rider. Fourth, Max Neurkirchner on his Alstare Suzuki. On the second row will start in fifth place Noriyuki Haga Brit rider Jonathan Rea, sixth and the Roman Emperor, Max Biaggi managed 7th place and set the all-time fastest ever speed recorded in Superbike at 325.8 km/h and crashed out during the second stint and had a long jog to get back to his garage.

The Texan is now on his way to take Doug Polen’s 1991 record of six straight superpoles and is only one superpole away from Davide Tardozzi’s (Ducati Xerox team manager) 1988 rookie superpole record and also John Kocinski 1996 superpole record.
